No country on Earth uses AI quite like Australia.
Ranked #1 of 121 countries on the Anthropic Usage Index — Australians use Claude at 6.4 times the rate their share of the world's working-age population would predict.
The Anthropic Usage Index is a geography's share of Claude usage divided by its share of working-age population. 1.0 means usage exactly proportional to population; an index of 6.4 means 6.4 times what population alone would predict.

Ahead of Singapore. Ahead of Switzerland. Ahead of everyone.
Of the 121 countries with a published usage index in May 2026, Australia sits on top — comfortably clear of the city-states and Nordic economies that usually headline technology rankings. The United States ranks 12th. The United Kingdom, 16th.

02 · The economics
A hundred-billion-dollar tailwind, and the biggest build-out since the mining boom.
The money is following the usage. Analysts put AI's potential upside to the Australian economy in the hundreds of billions, and the infrastructure spend underneath it has become one of the largest single investment lines in the national accounts.
Westpac notes that because much of the high-tech kit is imported, the net domestic GDP effect of the $155bn pipeline is roughly half its face value — still about A$75bn, supporting around 400,000 jobs as the build-out rolls through.
03 · How it's used
More work, more study — and less idle chat than the rest of the world.
Australians put AI to purpose. Compared with the global profile, a larger slice of Australian conversations is coursework and a smaller slice is personal life — and Australians are more likely to stay in the loop than to hand a task over entirely.

04 · Enterprise vs personal
Big business went from 9% to 35% in three years.
Individual Australians adopted AI faster than almost anyone. Australian businesses started slower — but the curve has bent sharply: large-company adoption has nearly quadrupled since 2021–22, and medium business has grown seven-fold.

Beyond formal adoption, more than a third of Australian businesses report they are already using or trialling AI tools — and surveys put SME experimentation at 29–37%.
The gap that matters
Australia's consumer usage ranks #1 in the world, while only 12% of its businesses formally report using AI. That gap — enthusiastic individuals inside slower institutions — is where most of the A$115bn upside is still sitting.
05 · What people are building
A nation of writers first, coders second.
Globally, software development is AI's second-biggest job. In Australia it drops to fifth — displaced by content creation, education and research. The most Australian artifact of the AI era isn't an app. It's a document.

06 · The hours it buys back

Across the index, tasks that a classifier estimates would take a person about five hours working alone ran to roughly 40 minutes of conversation with Claude — an ~87% compression of task time.

07 · The machinery
270 data centres — and twenty gigawatts more on the drawing board.
All of this runs on physical infrastructure, and Australia is building it at a pace with few precedents. The hyperscalers have made the country one of their largest commitments outside the United States.
Single projects now rival power stations: NEXTDC's planned S7 campus in Sydney is sized at 550MW — more grid draw than some Australian cities.

The ACT looks like a campus: 34.9% of its conversations are coursework (national average 20.7%) and 59.5% are augmentation-style — the highest collaboration rate in the country. Education & Learning is its #1 request topic; everywhere else, it's Content Creation.
